Reading & Language Arts

 

Phonics: The student will read and spell words with “ie” and “igh”.

Activity 1:
 
Students will spell words on the building mat with “ie”.  (see attachment called ie Building Mat”).  Please have your child write the letter(s) in the box to spell the word.  Make sure to use your best handwriting.  There is an answer key provided. 
 
Students will spell words on the building amt with “igh”. (see attachment called igh Building Mat”).  Please have your child write the letter(s) in the box to spell the word.  Make sure to use your best handwriting.  There is an answer key provided. 
 

*Students may use items such as letters, shaving cream, paint, or salt to spell the words.  

 

 

Activity 2:
 
Students will spell “igh” words with the word building activity.  (see attachment called “SSP Lesson 39”). Students will use letter cards to build words from the document called “Letter Card Printout”.  These cards can be printed out or students can write the letters on notecards or a sheet of paper.  Parents will read the steps for building words to the student, and the student will build the word.  Please make a list of the words and write a sentence with each word from the building mat and SSP Lesson 39.
 

* Please encourage your child to write a complete sentence and use their best handwriting.  Make sure to start your sentence with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark.  Click the links to play an "ie" and "igh" game.

Activity 3:
 
Have your child read the “ie” and “igh” poem. Please have your child write or circle the “ie” and “igh” words that are found in the poem and sort the words by writing them in their corresponding section on page 2 of the poem sort. (see attachment called Poem ie” and “ighSort)

 

 

 

Comprehension: Choose 1 of the following activities and use the book that is on the Pleasanton Primary Library page or a book of your choice.

 
 
Activity 1:
Write about your favorite part of the story.

Students will create a four square (See four square anchor chart).  Divide your paper into 4 squares and write about the characters, setting, problem, and solution from the story.

Activity 1:

 

Have your child gather 20 items outside or in your home.

 

Example: sticks, leaves, rocks, candy, toys, etc.

 

  • Use the objects to model the following addition and subtraction problems.

 

20 -7=______     15 + 3=______            4 + 8=_____

 

6 + 4=______     12 – 9=______            18 – 11=_____

 

Encourage your child to think out loud while modeling solving the problem.

 

Example: I collected 20 leaves from the front yard. Seven of them blew away. Now I have 13 left. So, twenty minus seven equals thirteen.

What is Your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
 
Create a tally chart like the one below.  Ask 5-10 people what their favorite ice cream flavor is and use tally marks to show their answer. Ask your parents to call people to take the survey.

Investigating Weather and Seasons

 

Activity:

 

Go outside with your child and observe the current weather conditions. If available, use a weather app to discuss temperature, wind speed, and forecast. Discuss the importance of weather forecasts. Talk about weather safety and what to do during severe weather conditions.

Have your child draw a picture of themselves wearing seasonally appropriate clothing during their favorite kind of weather. He or she will write a sentence about why the weather condition they drew is their favorite. Please take a picture of their drawing and send it to their teacher.

 

 

 

Making Economic Decisions

 

Activity:

 

 

Discuss wants and needs with your child. This is a great opportunity to talk about scarcity, supply and demand. (Ex. The toilet paper shortage, why is grocery shopping different now, etc.)

Have your child sort various household items into needs and wants. Talk about what makes them a need or a want. Please take a picture of the items sorted and send it to their teacher.

  • THE IDEA IS TO GET YOUR HEART RATE UP FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. REMEMBER YOU SHOULD GET TIRED, SWEATY, MAYBE HAVE A PAIN IN YOUR SIDE, AND IT MAY BE DIFFICULT TO BREATHE—THESE THINGS ARE A SIGN THAT YOU ARE MAKING YOUR HEART STRONGER-
